It's getting busier and busier in our yards with more birds turning up every day and most of them bringing along their chicks. It's costing us a fortune in sunflower seeds and suet. Yesterday's new arrivals were a pair of Eurasian Collared Doves. They live around our block but rarely visit us.
A score or more White-winged Doves are always with us but yesterday several of them were acting oddly: They were sitting on the fence and spreading out their tails.
It wasn't a mating display and they weren't preening. It wasn't particularly hot either, so I've no idea what they were doing. Whatever the reason for the Doves' behavior, a young House Finch thought it looked like fun and decided to join in.
We have half-a-dozen young Northern Cardinals now and one young male has an impressively tall crest.
