Our picnic lunch at Elm Lake was notable for the number of Yellow-crowned Herons that were busy feeding at the edge of the lake.
I walked over to get a closer look and found that I was crunching along on the remains of crawfish shells left there by the birds.
I watched one juvenile Yellow-crowned as it struggled for several minutes to eat a large crawfish.
The bird kept throwing the crawdad into the air and trying to catch it again in a way that would make it easier to eat.
On the way out of the park, I had a quick look at Creekfield Lake. As always, the lake had Great Egrets and Common Moorhens, several of the the latter accompanied by chicks.
There was another Purple Gallinule. Like the parent we had seen earlier, this one was also walking around with its wings raised.

Fantastic shots of the Herons!

Thanks, Pam. I love herons - and egrets. It's nice to have some birds that are big enough to watch without binoculars.
